HL7® FHIR® is becoming the “de facto” reference standard for data exchange in the health sector. New products, services and architectures are being developed with FHIR resources and new use cases are being created every day. Today’s eco-system of apps’ developers and small and medium-sized enterprises is primarily built with and around FHIR. But not only. Public authorities are likewise increasingly relying on FHIR to organise the exchange of data between public institutions.
What is FHIR?
FIHR stands for Fast (to design and implement) Healthcare Interoperability Resources It has an ambitious manifesto with a focus on implementers, targeted support to common scenarios, and the capability to leverage cross-industry web technologies. FHIR also aims to be able to support multiple paradigms and architectures as well as to demonstrate best practice governance.
What are the challenges to using FHIR?
Although FHIR is here to stay, having FHIR implemented in such a way that it can support and provide benefits to the whole eco-system can be challenging. There are clearly multiple priorities at stake.
From a business perspective, the question of Return on Investment (RoI) is critical and a capacity to anticipate both one-off and evolutive associated costs is essential (even if, for a number of companies, FHIR is an outstanding business opportunity). For public authorities, since they wish to promote strategic services, the priority is having the standard correctly defined, documented, and applied swiftly and consistently inside their own ecosystem. They also need to identify the mechanisms which allow them to guarantee both stability and controlled evolution, including global alignment (given the anticipated multiplication of use cases where interoperability plays a central role both within and across borders).

This webinar will provide the perspective of both industry and public authorities on the question of integrating and managing FHIR. It will also explore the different business and incentivisation models, which have been implemented across Europe to enforce compliance from industry players to emerging new standards.
