On 26-27 January 2027 we move beyond compliance and look at how to make the EHDS work for people. Save the date and join us!
With this Symposium, EHTEL invites organisations which are shaping EHDS-related strategies and roadmaps to examine whether the FAIR and Fluid vision of data can offer a useful framework for looking beyond compliance to truly workable, usable, and meaningful data that will improve Europeans lives, systems, and industry.

Scope and content
Europe is putting in place the legal and technical foundations of the EHDS. Going “beyond EHDS compliance” means opening up an important strategic stakeholder dialogue on important parallel steps related to health data. Currently, a substantial gap exists between the use of health data and many other useful forms of data. Addressing this gap may require more than simply standards and exchange infrastructure. This is where the application of the FAIR qualities of data – Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable – enters the scene to influence information produced and consumed in healthcare delivery workflows. As a result, fluidity of data will be achieved when information moves across system and organisational boundaries and is then incorporated into care.
Overall, the Symposium will introduce the concept of a distributed functional architecture – an EHR-centred Health Data Intelligence layer that could contribute to producing and consuming FAIR and Fluid data throughout the EHDS data journey. Achieving all this would be a shared responsibility that would cover all sorts of stakeholders, including vendors, healthcare organisations, and European and national public authorities. Several strategic propositions for action could be considered. Initial discussions should test the concepts, clarify which problems require action across organisational boundaries, map relevant existing initiatives, and identify subjects that warrant future collaborative work.
Ultimately, the Symposium’s aim will be to innovate and develop value with, and in, the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The all-important topic of going beyond data compliance, which underpins the Symposium, will – it is hoped – ultimately become a real plan of action for 2027 and beyond.
